Digital Library

Millions of genealogy records are transcribed and indexed every year. Digital resources are a critical element in a researcher’s toolbox.

Alberta Genealogical Society and AGS Edmonton Branch work together to make key subscription-based digital resources available to our members and visitors in our Library.

Our volunteers work hard to index Alberta-based records to provide family history researchers with more sources of information.

Here are some online treasures you can find in our Digital Library:

Online Databases

Research Databases

Volunteers with the Alberta Genealogical Society and AGS Edmonton Branch have diligently digitized thousands of Alberta-based records in three critical databases. These databases simplify searching homestead records, Alberta cemeteries and many more sources.

Alberta Homestead Index

Many Alberta ancestors came to the province through homestead incentives. These records are valuable in finding family. Volunteers have compiled an all-name index of homestead records held by the Provincial Archives of Alberta.

How to access

Visit Alberta Homestead Index to learn more.

Alberta Name Index

The Alberta Name Index (ANI) is a single database that allows researchers to search for Alberta residents named in various sources. Search results in ANI will lead you directly to the information needed to locate the original records.

How to access

Visit Alberta Name Index (ANI) to learn more.

Alberta Surname Index

The Alberta Surname Index is a compilation of over 800,000 surnames from grave marker inscriptions, burial records, and other cemetery records.

We're looking for volunteers to help index new records! Contact us for more information on how to get involved from home!

How to access

This index is available to the Alberta Genealogical Society members.

You can also request support from our Research Services team to help you find your ancestors.

Additional Resources

In addition to subscription-based research sources, we also offer quick access to important Alberta and Canadian research sites on our in-library computers, including:
